Under the banner of Balaji and Alt Entertainment, The Dirty Picture is a story of struggling actress Reshma (Vidya Balan), how she becomes one of the leading actresses in the glamour world. The movie has a set-up of South Indian film industry in the decade of 80s. In the film, Vidya Balan is playing a lead character as a bold and sizzling hot Silk Smitha.
Star cast of the movie includes Vidya Balan as Reshma (then her name changes to 'Silk'), Naseeruddin Shah as Suryakant, Emraan Hashmi as Abraham, Tusshar Kapoor as Ramakant, Anju Mahendru as Naila, Rajesh Sharma as Selvaganesh, Mangal Kenkre as Ratnamma, Shivani Tanksale.
The story begins from the point when Reshma runs away from home on the day when she is going to get married. She wants to become a lead actress and after a lot of adversity, she gets to perform her dancing talent in a film. The film's director, Abraham (Emraan Hashmi) is against the sex-laden songs in his film and that's why, he deletes the sexy song from his film. But somehow, Selva Ganesh (Rajesh Sharma) who is the producer of the film adds the song in the film and turns a flop film into a triumphant one. Producer of the film is very much impressed by Reshma and he now decides to launch Reshma as a lead lady in his next film opposite the superstar of the era Suryakant (Naseeruddin Shah). It is not easy for Silk (Reshma) who has to sell her body to win the superstar's favour. After so many downfalls, Silk soon becomes a big star and continues to uses her sexuality on big screen to entice the audiences.

The Dirty Picture Movie has raised the popularity scale of Vidya to such a pinnacle where she has now well matched with the other top-notch bollywood actresses. Milan Luthria, the director of the movie plays well with the characters and has bigger causes to smile now like Ekta Kapoor after a big hit on box-office.
